Nokia N8 Vs Apple iPhone 4

The Apple iPhone 4 was announced yesterday, and it’s generating a lot of publicity. We’re not convinced it has what it takes to better the upcoming Nokia N8, however, with Nokia’s flagship boasting a 12-Megapixel camera and all-aluminium construction, among other fantastic things. To find out how the Apple iPhone 4 gets on against the Nokia N8, join us after the break…
The Nokia N8 and the Apple iPhone 4 are two of the biggest handsets of 2010. Packed with features, they’re the future of smartphones. We still think the Nokia N8 has what it takes to hold off the portable pretender from Apple, but read on to find out more.
Camera

Apple is very proud of the fact that the Apple iPhone 4 features a 5-Megapixel camera. We’ve already seen photos from the 12-Megapixel snapper on the Nokia N8, and with Carl Zeiss optics and auto-focus also thrown in the results are truly stunning. Even mid-level Nokia’s such as the Nokia 6700 Slider can match the iPhone 4’s 5-Megapixels, and offer more in the way of features and image quality, courtesy of our good-friend Carl Zeiss.
Satellite navigation
It’s possible to get mapping on the Apple iPhone 4, but you’ll have to pay £xxx for a premium sat-nav service and in-car holder. Things are much better on the Nokia N8, with a full GPS chip built in, and Ovi Maps pre-installed as standard. Ovi Maps has changed the game in mobile navigation, proving completely free turn-by-turn navigation and premium features such as a Lonely Planet guide.

HD video output
The future is all about media and HD content, especially the ability to record HD video. So, there’s nothing better than being able to hook up the Nokia N8 to your HDTV and show all your mates your recordings. However, while the Nokia N8 can output video in 780p, the Apple iPhone 4 is restricted to 576p using an Apple Component AV cable.
Unrestricted software
While the Ovi Store is still in its infancy compared to the iPhone App Store, it has one big advantage – the fact it’s unrestricted. With Symbian being an Open Source platform, it’s easier than ever for developers to create useful apps, and even those without technical knowledge can create their own apps. With the iPhone App Store, developers have to get Apple’s acceptance for new apps, limiting software innovation.

Construction

The Apple iPhone 4 looks like a big step up in quality over the plastic Apple iPhone 3GS. It now features a glass finish on both the front and back, with a coating to help protect fingerprints. However, the Nokia N8 is made from anodised aluminium, which should prove more robust and remain looking as new for longer.
Multi-tasking
Although the Apple iPhone 4 OS offers basic third party multi-tasking, Symbian ^3 – the Nokia N8’s operating system – is designed to handle as many apps as possible. With a dedicated GPU to take some of the load off the processor, the hardware on the Nokia N8 is also perfectly suited to multi-tasking.
We know Apple fanatics will hate us for pointing out the Nokia N8′s plus points here, but we’d like to know what you Nokia fans think. Nokia N8 still the phone to have? Let us know in the comments below.
